Question's End

This was our second cache of the evening. It was located near one of my favorite spots in South Bend. I love to go here to save money on the latest releases by best selling authors. They are free for 3 weeks, 6 if I renew them. I also check out dvds and cds. I spend hours here at a time. To be fair, Ted loves this place too.

We showed up after hours in order to avoid muggles and we were victorious. I stayed in the car while Ted got out and ferreted out a tiny camouflaged key fob containing a log. It blended in quite nicely with it's surroundings but eagle-eye Ted spotted it after about 5 minutes of searching high and low. We did have to wait to return it due to some stray muggles who showed up taking a leisurely stroll downtown. This site has the propensity to be very crowded.

Since 1896 there has been a public library at this location in South Bend. The current building was dedication in October of 1992. In 2009, our library system was ranked 7th in the nation.

Cache Come Lightly

More like, Cache Come Anty. I found the cache after Ted passed it up. When I opened it an army of ants began to crawl out, all over my hand. I tried shaking them out, but I finally had to set the cache on the ground and let the ants crawl out on their own. After several minutes I picked up the magnetic key box and shook out the last couple of stragglers.

This cache was located near one of Ted favorite places to shop. I avoid this store as much as possible. My nephew Brad once worked there. I do miss the old man on the commercials. He was actually the neighbor of the company's owner (I know this bit o'trivia thanks to 3 degrees of separation from the owner!).

It was a quick, park and grab. What made it a bit tricky was my GPS. It took us to the middle of the driveway. We had to use our powers of deduction and look one of two directions for the cache.

Farmer's Crop

The second cache for the evening was actually our third choice. Choice number two was thick with muggles so we headed back to the car and on to this spot. The sky was darkening by now and we knew we had to find the cache quickly.

This cache is located near South Bend's famed Farmer's Market. The first thing I noticed was unrelated to the cache. A lovely stone ornament constructed by the WPA has either been damaged by someone or is simply falling apart.

I love history and it's preservation means so much. I'm still amazed when I'm speaking to people and they don't know about the WPA or how so many parks in South Bend and Mishawaka were adorned with these stone walls, stairways, and ornaments.

This caches was hidden in a spot that made my poor husband's skin crawl. He told me three times he was going to get it out. I told him each time that I was willing. Of course, he could be bested by his wife. What had brave Ted worried? There might be spiders in the hiding spot with the box! Finally the box was recovered, signed and replaced. After we returned to our car about 4 people came out of nowhere to walk right by the spot we had just left. What a close call.

We had a fun day even if we only had time for two caches.

Bowman Cemetery

Our first cache of the evening. A summer storm was on the was so the air was changing. The humidity was rising and the air was beginning to stir. We entered the cemetery and were quickly on the trail of the cache. Although we drove past the area, we didn't have far to walk when we went back. Ted was highly impressed with the hiding place of this cache.

This small cemetery is import to the history of South Bend. It contains grave sites of some of the cities early settlers. There are 2,295 internments at Bowman Cemetery. The Center for History will be giving a cemetery tour of this city cemetery in August for $2. It's a beautiful spot and I'm sure the history tour would be very interesting.
